The Mallorcan town of Porreres hosted the 19th Diada d'Agricultura Ecològica (Ecological Agriculture Day ) on the evening of July 11th , an event that this year opted for a completely different format than in previous years. The fair, organized by the Associació de la Producció Agroecològica de Mallorca (APAEMA) and the Porreres Town Council, moved from daytime hours and springtime to a nighttime event in the middle of summer, with the aim of exploring new ways for producers and consumers to connect. APAEMA President Miquel Coll explained that the change was due to both organizational circumstances and the desire to try a different approach, and the event was well-received despite the high temperatures recorded that afternoon.
The extreme heat marked the start of the day, which began at 19:00 PM but didn't reach its peak until after 20:30 or even 21:00 PM, when the drop in temperatures led to a larger crowd and more lively participation in the various areas of the fair. The streets and squares of downtown Porreres were filled with attendees who were able to sample organic products, participate in workshops, and enjoy live music, in an atmosphere that combined fun with a show of support for the agricultural sector.
Fifty exhibitors and activities for all audiences
A total of 50 stalls run by organic producers were spread throughout the old town of Porreres, offering a wide variety of products: honey, cheeses, cured meats, almond ice cream, wines, wooden toys, and decorative items, among others. In addition to the market, the Diada (Balearic Islands Day) brought together social and environmental organizations, responsible consumption initiatives, and projects related to biodiversity, land stewardship, and healthy eating. Attendees were able to sample culinary creations and wines, while also enjoying family activities, folk culture workshops, and live music performances. According to Miquel Coll, the goal was to create a fun space for producers and consumers to meet , showcasing the diversity of the Balearic agroecological sector and its contribution to a sustainable organic farming model . During the event, some exhibitors took the opportunity to advocate for agriculture with the slogan "Pagesia o mort" (Farmers or death), alluding to the decline this sector is experiencing.
Producte Ecològic de l'Any Award and 20th anniversary of APAEMA
One of the highlights of the evening was the presentation of the 2026 Organic Product of the Year Award , for which eight products from the Balearic Islands competed, including preserves, vegetable spreads, biscuits, wine, olive oil, fig coffee, and other processed products. The award went to 'Redonet Mediterrani', produced by Bon Bessó, which the jury particularly valued for its quality, innovation, local roots, and commitment to organic production. This year's edition also held special significance for APAEMA, as it coincided with the organization's 20th anniversary . The association took advantage of the celebration to highlight two decades of work in defense of sustainable production and organic farming , the land, and the agricultural sector of Mallorca. The organizers emphasized that the Diada (Balearic Islands Day of Organic Agriculture) has become one of the main annual events for the Balearic agroecological sector, thanks to the support of collaborating institutions and organizations.
The decision to hold the event in a summer and evening format, despite the initial high temperatures, proved to be well-received by the public, who turned out in droves from 8:30 pm onwards. The initiative, conceived by APAEMA, once again demonstrated the deep roots of this event in Porreres, a town that now considers it its own. With its combination of market, activities, music, and advocacy, the 19th Organic Agriculture Day reaffirmed its position as an essential meeting point for the organic sector in the Balearic Islands, proving that innovative formats can attract new audiences without losing the essence of sustainable production.
