Vietnamese oil company BSR (Binh Son Refining and Petrochemical) has taken a significant step into the biofuels market with the delivery of its first commercial batch of B5 biodiesel. The company supplied 25 cubic meters of this fuel to Military Petroleum Corporation and another 19,5 cubic meters to Nam Phuc Investment Joint Stock Company , according to a company statement. The shipments were made between August 5 and 10, marking a milestone in the firm's energy diversification strategy.
This initial batch is not the result of improvisation. BSR has followed an extremely rigorous blending and quality control process , with sample analysis in its laboratories and external certification using Method 7, which guarantees that the product complies with the basic standard TCCS 25:2026/BSR for B5 diesel fuel. Furthermore, all applicable commercial terms, similar to those of the 2026 sales contracts, have been respected.
A meticulous production process
To reach this point, BSR didn't simply mix fuel haphazardly. The company used approximately 3.000 liters of pure biodiesel (B100) to research and test the production of grades B5 and B10 . B100 is a biofuel composed entirely of fatty acid methyl esters (FAME), obtained from vegetable oils, animal fats, or used cooking oil, without any petroleum mixture. This experimental phase was crucial for fine-tuning the technical and commercial parameters before launching the product on the market.
According to BSR, the experimental production and sale of B5 biodiesel is fully compatible with the existing B100 feedstock. This step allows for the collection of technical and commercial data, as well as customer feedback , which will serve as a basis for improving the production process, quality control, business organization, and the biodiesel industry , and for future market expansion of this biofuel. It is not an isolated project, but rather part of a broader strategy.
Beyond B5: a commitment to the energy transition
To date, BSR has successfully produced and blended numerous environmentally friendly products. The company already offers Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), Sustainable Marine Fuel (SMFO), E10 RON 95 bioethanol, B5 biodiesel, and B10 biodiesel . This diversification not only represents an advancement in the corporation's production and commercial activities but also contributes to Vietnam's commitments to emissions reduction, the development of a green and circular economy, and ensuring national energy security.
The European and Spanish markets, where demand for biofuels grows year after year, could be a natural destination for these products. European regulations require a progressive reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in transportation , and B5 biodiesel, when blended with conventional diesel, allows for a smoother transition without the need to modify existing engines. Although BSR operates primarily in Southeast Asia, its experience and quality could serve as a benchmark for other producers.
In short, the delivery of this first commercial batch of B5 biodiesel solidifies BSR's position as a key player in the biofuels sector. The combination of rigorous quality control, investment in research, and product diversification demonstrates that the energy transition is not just a promise, but a tangible reality. Looking to the future, the company will continue to gather data and improve its processes to expand its offerings and contribute to a cleaner, more sustainable energy model.
