Recently, a group of companies from our region traveled to the neighboring country to strengthen commercial and technological ties in a rapidly growing sector: green hydrogen in Spain , aiming to make the Strait of Gibraltar a clean energy bridge.
This initiative, which has been supported by the public administration through AndalucÃa TRADE, is not a simple courtesy visit, since the Junta de AndalucÃa seeks to make our community the main gateway to Europe for this renewable energy source, taking advantage of the fact that Morocco has plenty of sun and wind to produce it at a good price.
Business alliances in the heart of Casablanca
The agenda in Casablanca was extremely busy, with over sixty bilateral meetings where companies from Seville, Huelva, and AlmerÃa sat down to talk face-to-face with key Moroccan players. In this context, companies such as Cubicoff, Clan Hydrogen, Clan Nitrogen, Evo Automotive, Ariema, and CaldererÃas Indálicas showcased their capabilities in fields as diverse as engineering, component manufacturing, and technical consulting.
It's not just about selling services, but about creating an ecosystem where both regions benefit. There has been much discussion about the creation of international consortia and how funding, with the support of entities like CaixaBank, can help these seemingly science-fiction projects become tangible industrial realities in the coming years.
The idea circulating among experts is that this bilateral collaboration will function like clockwork to decarbonize heavy industry on both sides of the Atlantic. Morocco already has its national strategy underway, called 'Offre Maroc', and Andalusian companies don't want to miss out on becoming its preferred partners in this journey towards sustainability.
Science and technology at Mohammed VI University
One of the highlights of the trip was the visit to Mohammed VI Polytechnic University in Ben Guerir, a leading institution in Africa. There, the Andalusian representatives were able to see firsthand the advancements in Power-to-X technologies and green ammonia production , which are essential for the safe and efficient long-distance transport of hydrogen.
Knowledge transfer is vital to ensure this energy corridor is not just a pipeline for gas, but an engine of innovation and specialized employment . Therefore, contact with Moroccan research centers allows our universities and technology centers to collaborate on joint projects that improve the efficiency of electrolyzers and other storage systems.
Logistics and challenges for a European corridor
For all this hydrogen to reach factories in Germany and France, the ports of Algeciras and Huelva must be up to the task. Significant investments in port infrastructure are planned to adapt the terminals for handling hydrogen derivatives, thus consolidating Andalusia as a key logistics hub that cannot be ignored on the European Union's energy map.
Although the outlook is very promising, there are still some obstacles to overcome, particularly regarding legal regulations. It is essential to approve a clear and stable regulatory framework that provides security for investors, as commissioning these plants and pipelines requires a significant financial investment that cannot be left to chance or subject to sudden changes in the law.
This strategic alliance, backed by European Regional Development Funds (ERDF), ensures the region's position at the forefront of the low-carbon economy. The combined industrial expertise of Andalusian companies and the energy generation capacity of the neighboring country paints a picture of a future where dependence on foreign fossil fuels is finally a thing of the past throughout the Euro-Mediterranean region.
