The Balearic Energy Institute (IBE) is still accepting applications for five shared self-consumption projects in Mallorca and Ibiza. Those interested have one last week to register and begin consuming electricity generated at public facilities by paying an annual fee of €100. This model allows for savings of up to €300 per year on electricity bills.
The initiative is aimed at individuals and businesses located within five kilometers of one of the facilities. The system requires no solar panels or maintenance costs, as the energy is distributed through the conventional grid and the distributor automatically applies the discount to the bill.
Where are the projects located?
The five solar installations are located between Mallorca and Ibiza. Specifically, the projects are at Parc Bit in Palma, the Camilo José Cela Primary School in Palma, the Melcior Rosselló i Simonet Primary School in Santa Maria del CamÃ, the Cas Serres parking lot in Ibiza, and the Sant Josep de sa Talaia nursery school. All of these are public spaces that generate energy to be distributed among nearby residents and businesses.
Those interested should apply through the IBE website, where the application guidelines and forms are available. Documentation can also be submitted in person at any of the Balearic Islands Energy Transition Offices. The deadline is in one week, so it's best to apply quickly to avoid missing out.
Requirements and conditions
To participate, you must live or have a business within five kilometers of one of the installations. The cost is an annual fee of 100 euros, which entitles you to receive electricity generated by the photovoltaic installations . According to the announcement, the estimated savings can reach 300 euros per year, depending on consumption and the energy allocated.
There's no installation required. The energy is fed into the grid, and the distributor automatically deducts the corresponding amount from the bill. This makes shared self-consumption an accessible option for those who don't have a roof suitable for solar panels.
An expanding model
This type of initiative is part of the growing trend towards collective self-consumption in Spain. Royal Decree 244/2019 regulates collective self-consumption, allowing communities of neighbors and industrial parks to share energy without requiring individual installations for each household. In the Balearic Islands, the IBE's call for proposals is a practical example of how to democratize access to solar energy.
Public aid and European funds are also facilitating the implementation of these systems. In cities like Valencia, energy rehabilitation plans that include self-consumption have been launched, but it's advisable to review the conditions of each call for proposals because they change frequently.
With an affordable fee and a simple application process, the five IBE projects offer an opportunity to reduce your electricity bill and contribute to the energy transition without any construction or maintenance. Registration is only open for one more week, so those who qualify should act quickly to avoid missing out.
