Iberdrola has completed the reception of the last monopiles manufactured for its Windanker offshore wind farm., located in German waters of the Baltic Sea. These structures, essential for the foundation of offshore turbines, have been produced by the alliance between Navantia Seanergies and Windar Renewables at its facilities in Fene (A Coruña), thus consolidating a long-standing strategic relationship between the companies.

The development of this project represents a considerable boost for the local and national industry. The production of the monopiles has generated around 300 jobs. and is included in a framework agreement signed in 2021 for the supply of large-scale foundations, known as XXL monopiles, which are increasingly in demand in the fixed offshore wind energy sector.

Advanced manufacturing and technological commitment at Fene

At the Navantia Seanergies facilities in Fene, the Navantia and Windar teams have worked together to complete this batch of foundations. Each monopile reaches up to 84 meters in length, 10 meters in diameter and can weigh up to 2.100 tons., dimensions that reflect the magnitude of the infrastructure required for this type of deepwater park.

To make the manufacturing of these pieces possible, 36 million euros were invested in renovating the plantThe work carried out included the adaptation of facilities for bending thick and large-diameter sheet metal, as well as the addition of new paint booths and storage areas. State-of-the-art technological equipment was also implemented to ensure the quality and efficiency of the production process.

The decision to increase the plant's capacity has positioned Navantia and Windar as European leaders in the manufacture of foundations for offshore wind power, consolidating the competitiveness of the Spanish industry in this field.

Windanker is part of the ambitious offshore wind hub that Iberdrola is developing in the Baltic Sea, along with the Wikinger (350 MW) and Baltic Eagle (476 MW) wind farms. Together, this energy complex will have over 1.100 megawatts (MW) of installed capacity and has involved a total investment of €3.500 billion.

Windanker is scheduled to be operational in 2026 and will provide a generating capacity of 315 MWThe farm will be equipped with state-of-the-art offshore turbines, with an individual output of nearly 15 MW per turbine, which will maximize the use of wind resources in the area.

This progress strengthens Iberdrola's position as a key player in the European and global energy transition, committed to large-scale renewable solutions and the use of advanced technology in the production and exploitation of wind energy in offshore environments.

Collaboration and industrial impact

Industrial sector in Fene for Windanker

The collaboration between Iberdrola, Navantia Seanergies, and Windar Renovables has already spanned a decade of joint projects. During this period, the total number of orders exceeded 1.000 billion euros., with operations in key markets such as the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and the United States. Mutual trust has enabled us to tackle complex developments and position Spanish companies at the forefront of international offshore wind energy.

The companies involved emphasize the importance of this strategic alliance. Both the presidents of Navantia and Windar Renovables emphasized the added value of contributing to both the strengthening of the national supply chain and the international recognition of their technological and manufacturing capabilities.

For Iberdrola, its long-term relationships with suppliers and the promotion of stable agreements allow it to maintain industrial activity in Spain and generate employment opportunities and ongoing technological development in the renewable energy sector.
