In recent years, Spain and various European countries have witnessed the implementation of strategic programs and sectoral clusters that are paving the way for a more efficient and environmentally friendly economy. Through collaboration between companies, technology centers, and government agencies , innovative proposals are emerging that go beyond conventional recycling, promoting the valorization of biomass and the development of new bio-based products and services.
Successful models in rural areas

One of the standout models is the FORTEXVAL project, a practical example of a circular bioeconomy applied to sustainable forest management in rural areas . This initiative brings together entities such as the Saja Reserve Association, the Galician Automotive Technology Center (CTAG), and the CTC Technology Center. Its objective is to extract biomass sustainably , using animal traction techniques and specialized machinery to process and add value to forest resources directly in the forest.
These actions allow for the production of materials such as biochar, reinforcements for industrial plastics , and pellets, reducing environmental impact and the risk of fires, while fostering economic opportunities in sparsely populated areas. Furthermore, the initiative has attracted the interest of both businesses and social organizations , who see this model as a strategy that can be replicated in other regions.
The production of biochar, a byproduct of biomass pyrolysis, improves soil quality, increases fertility, and contributes to carbon sequestration, while the incorporation of plant fibers into industrial products helps reduce the use of fossil polymers. Bioeconomy GIANTS will facilitate the development of more than 200 projects in rural areas, the creation of green jobs, and the launch of bio-based products such as natural fertilizers, bioplastics, and biomaterials . This strategy aims to leverage agricultural and forestry byproducts to transform them into sustainable and profitable solutions, fostering a more circular and efficient economy.

During an event in Brussels, coordinated by the Biotech4Food project, representatives from the Navarrese food industry and innovation centers actively participated in defining policies and seeking solutions to transform food production. Through collaboration with international clusters and the integration of technological infrastructure, Navarre is contributing to the advancement of biotechnology and sustainable ingredients.
This commitment enables the exchange of knowledge and access to opportunities within the European Green Deal and the ecological transition, strengthening an innovation network that spans all of Europe.
