The logistics sector in Spain is going through a stage of clear transformation and expansion, driven by both the growing demand for international trade and the commitment to sustainability and resource efficiency. In recent months, various initiatives linked to logistics platforms have dominated the agenda, reflecting the strategic importance of these spaces for supply chains and the regional economy.
The new projects for the expansion and construction of logistics platforms not only seek to respond to the increase in freight traffic, but also highlight the need to incorporate sustainable solutions and adapt to the challenges of the circular economy, digitalization and intermodal connectivity.
Expansions and new developments in Catalonia
Among the most active areas is Catalonia, where the Consum cooperative is moving forward with its logistics development plan. Highlights the expansion of one of its platforms through the construction of an 8.800 square meter warehouse dedicated exclusively to reverse logistics, an action that illustrates the commitment to the circular economy and sustainable waste and return management. In addition, the creation of a new logistics center in Montcada i Reixac (Barcelona), on a recently acquired 142.000 square meter plot that could reach 100.000 square meters of buildable area, consolidating the cooperative's position in the Catalan distribution network.

Innovation and sustainability: the case of Zona Franca 4.0
Prologis leads one of the most relevant initiatives in Catalonia, which has received the award of a plot of 20.147 square meters in the first logistics ring of Barcelona, managed by the Free Trade Zone Consortium. The project includes the construction of the 'Free Zone 4.0' platform, whose construction will begin in the second quarter of 2026 and whose delivery is scheduled for early 2027.
The design provides for two symmetrical modules to maximize operational versatility, with 17 loading docks, two access ramps, and a clear height of 11 meters, geared toward sectors as diverse as e-commerce, food, pharmaceuticals, and logistics services related to the main port nodes and distribution hubs.
The commitment to sustainability is another of its central axes, since The ship will have BREEAM Excellent and WELL Gold certifications, a 700 kWp photovoltaic installation, and advanced energy storage systems through a microgrid, promoting energy self-sufficiency. Rainwater recovery systems, drainage pavements, and infrastructure for electric mobility, all accompanied by green areas and spaces for employee well-being.
New intermodal platforms in Aragon

In Aragon, logistics development is also booming with the Ponentia La Melusa-Tamarite de Litera platformFollowing the approval of the Aragon General Interest Plan, work has begun with earthworks and urban development, laying the groundwork for one of the most ambitious logistics projects in the region. Nearly 375.000 cubic meters of earth have already been mobilized on a 1,4 million square meter plot, and the project is expected to be completed in approximately 18 months.
One of the key aspects will be the construction of a railway terminal This will allow direct connection to the national and European networks. The infrastructure, which will involve a total investment of around €145 million spread over several phases, will have the capacity to move 150.000 TEUs per year and will have specific tracks for loading, unloading, and a railway highway, facilitating the efficient transfer of semi-trailers to trains.
The platform will be equipped with areas of secure parking for heavy vehicles, thanks to partial funding obtained from the Connecting Europe Facility, will offer comprehensive services for transporters, catering and rest areas, as well as a residential area designed to meet the expected housing demand generated by the increase in local employment.
Tax incentives in Badajoz to attract business activity
The push for logistics platforms comes not only through major investments, but also through municipal and regional policies that seek to attract companies and encourage industrial establishment. The Badajoz City Council has announced significant reductions in property tax and ICIO for companies that are committed to establishing themselves in the local Logistics Platform.
The discounts will reach 75% of the property tax (IBI) for the first two years and 50% for the following three years for activities recognized as being of interest and useful for promoting employment, requiring the creation of at least one job. In the case of the ICIO (Industrial Property Tax), the discount may reach 95% if active staff are hired and retained for a minimum period of three years, in line with the joint strategy of the city council and the Regional Government of Extremadura to transform this area into a true logistics development hub in southwest Spain.
Additionally, adjustments are being made to other municipal budgets to optimize investment and address infrastructure and service improvements, thus contributing to the comprehensive improvement of the area surrounding the platform.
Coordination between administrations, the commitment to railway intermodality and energy efficiency, and the implementation of economic stimulus policies, are shaping a robust and advanced logistics ecosystem which places Spain as a benchmark in logistics innovation and sustainability.
