electric bike in the city

In recent times, the electric bicycle has gone from being a niche alternative to becoming one of the most important means of urban transport in Spain. The combination of legal changes, the launch of new models, and the institutional commitment to sustainable mobility are redefining the role of e-bikes in both cities and rural areas.

Between new regulations, financial aid, and technological advancements, the electric bicycle sector is undergoing a genuine transformation. From simplified access to cutting-edge models to the introduction of innovative charging systems and a greater focus on accessibility, the national landscape shows a clear direction towards sustainability and efficiency.

Legal Changes: Mandatory Insurance for Electric Bikes?

regulatory electric bicycle

The recent update to Spanish regulations on civil liability and insurance has brought important clarifications for electric bicycle users, especially after the transposition of Directive (EU) 2021/2118 and its inclusion in the Law on civil liability and insurance in the circulation of motor vehicles.

Electric bicycles that meet Pedelec requirements (motor up to 250W, pedal assist cut off at 25 km/h, and operation only while pedaling) still do not require mandatory insurance, registration, or license plate, which facilitates their use and purchase. However, so-called "speed pedelecs ," capable of exceeding 45 km/h and equipped with an independent throttle, will be considered motor vehicles and, therefore, must be insured, registered, and have a roadworthiness certificate.

These changes aim to clarify regulations based on the type and power of each electric bicycle, protecting both users and victims in the event of an accident. Furthermore, the new law mandates the creation of a public registry of light personal vehicles and expands coverage in the event of an insurer's insolvency.

Aid programs and inclusive mobility: the Galician example

The Galician regional government (Xunta de Galicia) has launched the EBICI program, with a budget of one million euros to incentivize the purchase of electric bicycles and wheelchair-accessible devices. The main objective is to reduce car use for short urban and interurban journeys by promoting environmentally friendly and accessible transportation alternatives for everyone.

EBICI subsidies cover up to 70% of the purchase price for large families in the special category, with a maximum of €700 per bicycle. The program distinguishes two main categories: new electric bicycles with pedal assist and electric or hybrid handcycles adapted for people with reduced mobility.

Applications must be submitted through participating businesses, which act as collaborating entities, streamlining the process for beneficiaries and ensuring the proper use of funds. Special emphasis has been placed on inclusion, allowing wheelchair users to also benefit from electric devices that facilitate their daily mobility.

New releases and technology: from fast charging to affordable e-MTBs

Innovation continues in the world of electric bicycles: brands and companies are investing in longer-lasting batteries, more powerful motors, and groundbreaking charging systems. A prime example is Morelle's advancement: an e-bike with a silicon anode battery capable of over 1.000 recharges and compatible with electric vehicle charging stations. This advancement not only speeds up charging times but also extends the bike's lifespan, one of the most frequent demands among users.

Another important development is the arrival of affordable electric mountain bikes, such as the Santa Cruz Vala AL, which offers the DNA of its carbon version at a more accessible price thanks to the use of aluminum frames. With a Bosch Performance Line CX motor and a 600 Wh PowerTube battery, this model maintains the lifetime frame warranty and is available in various configurations to suit different budgets and needs.

In the urban sphere, companies like Tern are strengthening their presence in Spain with cargo and foldable models, betting on sustainable and efficient mobility in cities, hand in hand with new commercial alliances that facilitate their distribution and local sale.

Practical solutions: wireless charging and challenges when traveling with an e-bike

The development of wireless charging systems like the Tiler Compact represents one of the most practical innovations of the moment, allowing you to recharge your electric bike's battery simply by placing the kickstand on a pad installed on the street. This simple and intuitive method eliminates the need to carry bulky chargers and promises to make everyday use easier, especially in urban environments.

Restrictions on transporting electric bicycles by plane remain a major obstacle for users. International regulations restrict the transport of large-capacity batteries due to the risks they pose, and most airlines prohibit carrying complete e-bikes, except in specific cases: only if the battery is removable and has a capacity of less than 160 Wh, which particularly limits small urban models.

The continued growth of electric bicycles in Spain is closely linked to legal and technological factors, as well as practical solutions that facilitate their use and transport. The availability of subsidies, innovative models, and the incorporation of technologies such as wireless charging are solidifying the e-bike as an increasingly valuable option for daily and sustainable mobility.
