Recycling of household cooking oil is gaining importance as a fundamental tool to reduce pollution and move towards a more sustainable energy model. In León, a group of young university students has taken a key step. by launching a project that proposes to transform used vegetable oil into biodiesel, thus facilitating responsible waste management and the use of resources that would otherwise pose a serious environmental risk.
The initiative, known as “From Frying to Flowing”, was born within the University of Guanajuato, where students and graduates from the departments of Sustainable Chemical Engineering and Renewable Energy have joined forces to offer an effective solution to the problem of improper oil disposal. In addition to preventing the contamination of thousands of liters of water, the project encourages citizen participation and strengthens social commitment to the environment.
An environmental problem turned into an opportunity
At present, A single liter of used oil can contaminate up to 40.000 liters of water., which poses a direct risk to nearby aquifers and ecosystems. In the city of León, it is estimated that 70% of cooking oil is consumed in homes and the rest in the industrial and commercial sectors, but there are only four official collection centers, a number insufficient to cover the collection demand and reduce water pollution.
The implementation of the plan provides for the installation of 350 collection points distributed in primary schools by 2026, which will facilitate the delivery of waste by the public. This step aims to bring recycling closer to neighborhoods and communities, simplifying logistics and making it much more accessible for everyone.
Biodiesel, a biofuel that promotes sustainability
Biodiesel is made from used vegetable oils. and represents a much less polluting alternative than conventional petroleum-derived diesel. Its use reduces the emission of gases harmful to the environment and contributes to diversifying energy sources, promoting the circular economy and moving toward a more resilient city that respects the natural environment.
One of the pillars of the plan is not only the use of energy, but also the promotion of Community participationParticipating schools will receive incentives such as school supplies, eyeglasses, and support for sports activities, a measure aimed at engaging younger generations in the culture of recycling and environmental protection from an early age.

The work of those responsible for the project has been distinguished with the Support from the University of Guanajuato and the General Directorate of the Environment of León, thanks to the "Friends for the Planet" award. This distinction highlights the efforts of young people committed to transforming local reality and seeking solutions to mitigate the effects of climate change.
In addition to collecting and processing the oil, the initiative promotes environmental education among the population, strengthening values of responsibility and sustainability. Institutional support guarantees the program's continuity and its potential for replication in other locations facing similar challenges.
The collaborative effort between universities, public administration, and society positions vegetable oil recycling and biodiesel production as key strategies for reducing water pollution and promoting an energy model less dependent on fossil fuels.
