There are stories that, by their very nature, manage to capture everyone's attention and seem like they could easily be turned into a movie. A story of fighting against adversity in which a single person becomes a modern-day David fighting against a corporate giant Goliath. The story of Wang Enlin, a humble Chinese farmer, is one such epic.
Enlin, who had received only three years of basic education in his youth, spent 16 years studying law on his own to sue a powerful state-owned chemical company, Qihua Group, which he accused of contaminating his land. This monumental effort not only benefited him but also his neighbors, whose land had been affected by chemical spills. The incredible thing about this story is that, despite his lack of resources and formal education, Wang Enlin won the first instance of the lawsuit against the corporation.
The struggle of a self-taught farmer
Wang Enlin is a man from Yushutun Village, located on the outskirts of Qiqihar, in Heilongjiang Province, China. His legal ordeal began in 2001, when his land was severely affected by toxic waste from the Qihua Group chemical company . Like many other residents of his village, Wang relied on agriculture for his livelihood. However, everything changed when, on the eve of the Lunar New Year, his home and fields were flooded with toxic waste from the nearby Qihua-owned polyvinyl chloride factory.
The environmental impact was devastating. According to a 2001 Chinese government document, the contaminated land was deemed unsuitable for cultivation due to severe pollution. Despite this, Qihua continued to dump between 15,000 and 20,000 tons of chemical waste annually until 2016.
Wang decided she would fight for her rights and those of her neighbors. However, she faced a major obstacle: she had no idea how to proceed legally. As in many other cases in China and around the world, pollution claims required evidence and a detailed understanding of environmental laws. It was then that Wang made a life-changing decision: she set about studying law on her own.
An arduous legal epic

Without the money to buy books or access a formal education, Wang began visiting a local bookstore daily, where he copied law books by hand in exchange for sacks of corn as payment. This cycle repeated itself for years, accumulating valuable knowledge that, although self-taught and without any guidance, allowed him to understand which laws the Qihua company might have violated.
Over the next few years, Wang compiled evidence of the damage caused by the spills, as well as rallying his neighbors in a class-action lawsuit against the company. It was not until 2007 that his cause attracted the attention of a law firm specializing in pollution cases, which offered free legal assistance. However, despite this support, the case was held up for almost eight years, until, in 2015, the case finally reached the courts.
Thanks to the data and evidence Wang gathered over a decade and a half, the Quqihar District Court ruled in favor of the villagers of Yushutun, ordering Qihua to pay collective compensation of £96,000 , equivalent to approximately $120,000. This initial victory was a major blow to the company, whose value exceeded £233 million.
However, Qihua did not accept defeat and filed an appeal, showing that the legal battle was still a marathon with no end in sight. Nevertheless, Wang Enlin made it clear that he would not give up until he had secured full justice for himself and his neighbours.
The social and environmental impact of waste disposal
The situation in Yushutun is a reflection of the growing environmental problems facing China, a country that has experienced rapid industrial growth. Pollution of agricultural soils and water sources is a problem affecting hundreds of villages similar to Yushutun, where people depend on agriculture for their livelihood.
The case of Qihua Group is particularly alarming, as it was a state-owned company engaged in the production of polyvinyl chloride, a substance widely used in the manufacture of plastics. The toxic waste not only contaminated farmland but also reached drinking water sources, posing enormous health risks to the inhabitants of the region.
Studies in China have shown that long-term exposure to certain industrial chemicals, such as vinyl chloride compounds, can cause serious health problems, including cancer, respiratory disorders, and skin diseases.
Similar cases around the world

This is not an isolated case. Similar situations have occurred around the world, such as the struggles of farmers and citizens against large chemical companies that have contaminated their land and water systems. One notable case is that of American lawyer Robert Bilott , who exposed DuPont's global contamination with PFOA and other toxic chemicals.
Bilott spent more than 20 years defending thousands of people affected by water pollution in West Virginia, USA. Similar to Wang Enlin, he took on a giant corporation and achieved important court victories. These cases highlight the importance of persistence and fighting for environmental justice despite the enormous legal and financial obstacles faced by affected communities.
These cases, like Bilott's or Wang's, show that while taking on a multinational corporation may seem impossible, justice can prevail if you persevere. The stories also underscore the importance of strong legal systems and access to justice for marginalized communities.
The path to justice
Wang Enlin’s story is far from over. Although he has made significant progress, challenges remain. Qihua Group’s appeal could drag out the case for years, and uncertainty over how much the villagers should actually be paid adds an extra layer of difficulty to the situation.
Enlin's story, however, is a powerful lesson in perseverance. The moment she decided she would take on her own case, she embarked on a personal crusade that would not only change her life, but also the lives of many villagers in her same situation. It's a reminder that sometimes the law can be a powerful tool when it's in the hands of those seeking justice, even when everything seems to be against them.
Throughout history, there have been countless examples of ordinary people who have achieved great changes through their determination and sacrifice. Wang Enlin is one such example, and his story continues to be a symbol of the fight for human rights and environmental protection in an increasingly industrialized world.
The struggle of David against Goliath is still present in our times, and Wang Enlin is a clear example of how a person can, with courage, knowledge and determination, move mountains and confront large corporations that often seem to be above the law.
