Solar record: Europe sets historic milestones in electricity production and prices

  • Europe reaches historic highs in solar generation, surpassing sources such as nuclear and wind power for the first time.
  • Increased installed capacity and favorable weather conditions are driving record production in several countries, especially Spain and Germany.
  • Mass solar production coincides with historic lows in wholesale electricity prices.
  • The advancement of solar energy is accelerating the transition to a more sustainable and profitable energy model for European consumers and electricity systems.

Record solar electric power in Europe

In recent weeks there have been recorded historic records in solar energy production in Europe, placing it as a protagonist in the energy mix and responsible for some of the lowest electricity prices in recent yearsThis progress reflects the consolidation of solar energy as a pillar of the European energy transition and highlights the importance of photovoltaic technology in the efficient, sustainable, and affordable management of the continent's electricity supply.

The unstoppable development of solar energy has led the European Union to break several generation records in the first half of 2025, placing this source even above traditionally dominant technologies such as nuclear and wind. The combination of constantly growing installed capacity and particularly sunny weather conditions have been key to achieving these milestones.

Solar energy becomes the main source of electricity in the European Union

According to the most recent data, Solar energy generated 22,1% of the EU's total electricity during June, reaching 45,4 terawatt hours (TWh). This represents a 22% increase compared to the same month last year, overtaking nuclear power for the first time (21,8%, 44,7 TWh) and relegating wind power to third place (15,8%, 32,4 TWh).

This leap in solar generation has been especially evident in at least thirteen European countries, among which Germany, Spain, the Netherlands and Greece stand out. All of them have managed to beat their own monthly production records, as a result of both the expansion of solar infrastructure as long days of sunshine.

National solar records and falling wholesale market prices

The solar drive has had direct effects on electricity prices, which have been at historically low levels for several days. Spain, in particular, has seen its wholesale market record the lowest prices in Europe, reaching averages below the €17/MWh, the lowest since at least last November.

The trend has been shared by other relevant markets. Germany, Italy, France and Portugal also experienced solar production peaks and price drops, while wind power, although growing year-on-year in several areas, failed to match the momentum of photovoltaics.

The phenomenon has been reflected in the average monthly electricity prices, which in many of the main European markets have remained below 70 euros/MWhFrance, for example, recorded its lowest level since June 2020, while other markets such as Italy, the Netherlands, Germany, and Belgium hit multi-year lows.

Impact of solar energy on electricity bills and the energy system

La The proliferation of solar energy not only has positive effects on sustainability, but also contributes to a tangible savings on the electricity bills of homes and businesses. When photovoltaics covers a relevant part of the demand, reduces dependence on more expensive technologies, such as gas or coal, reducing the cost per kilowatt hour.

Another key advantage is the independence from fossil fuels and energy imports, protecting countries from international crises and price fluctuations. In fact, recent reports from the European Commission highlight how record solar generation has helped reducing the share of Russian gas in energy supplies of the region.
