In Barcelona, concerns about excessive traffic noise have led to innovative measures to address one of the city's major problems. Recently, the City Council, together with the BIT Habitat Foundation and Fira de Barcelona, selected two technological initiatives aimed at reducing noise pollution in the city, using tools based on artificial intelligence and real-time monitoring solutions.
In Barcelona, 85% of noise pollution comes from transportation , primarily road traffic. To address this challenge, an international call for proposals was launched , resulting in the selection of two projects that will be piloted starting in late 2025, as part of the city's smart city and sustainable mobility strategy.
Technological solutions to detect and analyze urban noise
Both selected projects focus on the use of high-precision acoustic sensors , computer vision systems, and data analysis using advanced artificial intelligence algorithms. Their main function will be to identify the areas of Barcelona where noise is most intense and even determine which types of vehicles are primarily responsible for exceeding permitted noise limits.
The first project, developed by the Dutch company Sorama BV, is based on the Loud Vehicle Detection system . Using acoustic cameras and artificial intelligence, it pinpoints vehicles producing noise levels exceeding acceptable limits, displaying this information to the public in real time via LED panels . This not only gathers data for future action but also aims to raise awareness about the impact of noise on the environment.
On the other hand, the joint proposal from Bettair and Trafficnow, under the name Traffic-Noise , introduces a platform that integrates information from acoustic sensors, computer vision systems, and predictive analytics . Its approach allows for real-time correlation of noise levels with traffic volume and type, anticipating critical incidents and supporting decision-making to improve urban planning and design.
Implementation and scope of pilot tests
Both systems will be deployed starting in the fourth quarter of 2025 and will have an initial estimated duration of eighteen months . During this period, key data will be collected to help define future actions in the region. Each project will receive €100.000 in funding, approximately 70% of its total cost , demonstrating clear support for technological innovation with social impact.
These pilot tests aim not only to reduce noise , but also to optimize mobility and the quality of the urban environment . The information obtained will allow, among other things, the implementation of new measures to mitigate the problem , the evaluation of the real impact of existing mobility policies, and the reinforcement of Barcelona's position as a leader in innovation and urban sustainability.
The Barcelona Innova LAB Mobility initiative , under which these projects are framed, aims to enable technology companies, startups, universities, and research centers to test solutions to the city's challenges under real-world conditions, with a particular focus on sustainability and citizen well-being. In fact, nearly twenty proposals, mostly from international companies , participated in this latest call for proposals, reinforcing Barcelona's commitment to attracting talent and cutting-edge technology.
One step closer to a less noisy city
The combination of advanced technology and data analysis is emerging as the best ally for tackling the challenges of modern cities. From identifying noise sources and offending vehicles to planning real-time actions , these solutions represent a significant advance in the fight against noise pollution and the creation of a healthier environment for citizens.
The results obtained during these eighteen months will allow us to evaluate the possibility of extending the use of these systems to other areas of the municipality and even exporting the experience to other cities interested in combating the negative effects of noise.
With the implementation of these initiatives, Barcelona reinforces its role as a leading city in the application of new technologies to improve the quality of urban life , focusing on the mobility and sound well-being of its inhabitants through artificial intelligence, acoustic monitoring and predictive analysis.
